I have never wrote a review but felt compelled to include my thoughts on this novel. To say I'm an avid reader is an extreme understatement. I consume books like my french bulldog consumes plastic toys. Any day can find me chest deep in mystery, horror, fantasy, or thriller stories from a large variety of authors. There is never a time when I don't have three or more books going at once. I believe it's a result of my need to find that one book that will drag from my depths the true emotions that life has forced me to conceal in places most people fear to tread.

I found that book in Under Angels, by Jace Daniel Albao. His writing style is dark, dangerous and compelling. The story took me by the throat from the first line and shook me right through the ending. The characters were emotionally electric and once I began the novel there was no other life but theirs. I read the book in one day, forsaking all others, until the early evening found me at the finish line with tears and a powerful desire to read everything this man has ever written, whether novel or notes on a pub napkin.

I do not recommend this novel to those who read "Urban Fantasy" such as Twighlight or the plethera of vamps, werewolves, etc. stories that take horror and make it into a cotton candy dreamscape. This is for the true fan of genre who aches to return to the days of Robert Bloch and Richard Matheson.

I wasn't sure that I was going to like this book until almost the very end ...but when I decided, I decided that I like it, very much. First, I'm a sucker for dogs, even war dogs ...and much of this story is told from the dog's point of view, which the author handles extremely well. His dog isn't just a person in a dog suit ...he thinks, experiences and reacts like a dog, and what a wonderful hero this special pup turns out to be! Part of what kept me from immediately "taking" to the story was the plot line that involved some ...other worldly (well, sort of) beings, and I was wondering, until I finally figured out what was going on, whether we were getting a gratuitous dose of the paranormal, just because it's so popular at the moment. the answer to that is no, and when all the pieces fall into place, it makes perfect sense, and moves the entire story on to another level entirely.

If you aren't fond of word puzzles or cryptography, be aware that there is a lot of it in this story ...as there must be. I'm not good at such games, so I spent a good deal of time waiting for the hero (human) to "get it", but watching the process was as interesting for me as solving the puzzle would have been.

In the end, this is an incredibly human story, about love, loyalty and, ultimately life, and by the time I had read the last word, I had fully realized how glad I was that I had persevered and that this book touched me, intellectually and emotionally.

I enjoyed the writing style, too, it is sometimes tender, sometimes brutal, but always challenging in all the best ways.

Strangely enough, having a third dog singular narrator works! There's a pretty good tale (heh) to be told, and I did enjoy it. A man, Pete Durante, - and his dog - fight to save the lives of his wife and daughter, who have been taken by the devil? the grim reaper? Evil? This question is my major problem with the story. The nature of the Antagonist is unclear. His name is Rip Greamer - really! He appeared when Shadow's mother [Shadow is the dog/narrator] and Shadow's siblings did not survive birth, to take their souls to the next stage in their journey. But for most of the novel, he is also portrayed as an evil entity that plays games with the lives of humanity, and is the entity against whom Pete is engaged in a battle of mind and body to save his wife and daughter. He also appears as a helper to Pete in the same battle. And he appears at the end in a role which is far from evil, and falls definitely on the good side.

The author can't really have it both ways. Rip Greamer (please, please rename this character. This is just painful!) should be broken into two characters: the evil entity, and the benign guide (for lack of a better description). His dual role doesn't work, in my opinion.

I noticed few errors in grammar, spelling and punctuation.

I rated this book a 3*, based on my problem with the Antagonist's nature, but otherwise I enjoyed the book and would certainly read another by this author.

I'm struggling at work today...why? Because I stayed up WAY too late last night so I could finish this book. I kept telling myself one more chapter and then I will go to bed, one more chapter and then I will go to bed. Sixteen chapters and ten minutes of post-book crying later I was finally able to go to bed. This book was phenomenal. The best way for me to describe it is mind-bending. What's real, what's not, what's around the next corner or in the next hole, it kept me on the edge of my seat. It had a certain fast-paced urgency I couldn't get enough of. The character of Rip Greamer is frighteningly realistic and made my pulse race anytime he appeared. I love the fact that it was written from the point of view of Shadow the dog, it added a certain simple sweetness to the whole story. What owner doesn't want to believe that our beloved pets would go to the ends of (or in this case the center of) the earth for us? I would recommend this book to ANYONE who has even the slight bit of interest in the supernatural. I'm very much looking forward to the graphic novel. I hope Jace will continue with his writing as I would very much love to see what he could come up with next.

    3.0 out of 5 stars A compulsive page-turner
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 20, 2013
What a great read! A compulsive page turner written from the point of view of the protagonist's dog. If that sounds corny it is not meant to. The concept works, and works brilliantly, with the ending being quite emotional. Although I could not put the book down I was confused a little with some of the timelines, and I may be able to resolve that the next time I read it, and I *will* read it again. I loves Jace's style of writing: fluid, gritty and purposeful. The only problem I had with his style, hence only three stars, was the use of bad language in the text. I can see the argument that some of it was contextual, but a little was not. My opinion is that it is very rarely completely justified. I know that in 'the real world' people do use such language, but it is never necessary, in my opinion, to have the words staring at you from a book you have just bought. But really, that does not detract from the fact that this is a gritty, fast moving story about love, loyalty, and life.
